About Shootles Material

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ABOUT SHOOTLES

What kind of material do you have ?
Shootles specializes in artistic images. We do not seek to compete with large image banks. We only post material of an artistic nature which we believe would be difficult to find on other sites. As such our bank of material is smaller and more eclectic.

What's the story with the two types of licenses ?
For the great majority of cases, a Standard license is all you need: you just pay the price indicated under the image. However, under certain conditions -- for an example: if you want to use the image on the cover of an international magazine with a printing of half a million copies -- you need an Enhanced license. For use under the very wide 'Enhanced License,' choose the quantity multiplier indicated. Please refer to the Standard License and Enhanced License documentation provided. For any questions, special cases, or considerations, feel free to mail us at info@shootles.com.

Can I search without being registered?
Yes. You can search and download free images without registering on our site. The image comps you download will have a watermark on them. To save images to your cart for later access, you'll need to complete the registration form.

How do I get a non-watermarked comp?
If you are already registered, send us an email and we can arrange it.

How do I get detailed information about an image?
In-depth information about an image is usually included in its description. The Image Details page provides complete information about an image, such as keywords associated with that image, file sizes and additional information. This information is provided on a best-effort basis and we do not warrant it to be exact. If you feel you need more information you may mail us at info@shootles.com

How does your image system work?
Our archive is constituted by contributing artists and is comprised of rights-free images. Unless otherwise indicated they do not include model releases.

PURCHASING IMAGES

Do I need to register to purchase?
Yes, you need to register. Click here for detailed registration information. If you are not yet registered, you will be prompted to complete your mailing and billing profile as part of the image purchasing process.

How safe is it to use my credit card on your site?
We use an external payment processor. Credit cards are currently processed by Paypal, a secure e-commerce site. Your payment information is therefore entirely secured. No financial or payment information is collected by our website.

Rights-ready, Royalty-free
Our system is easy. Our images are all royalty-free. We have two sorts of licenses: one for simple usage, and another for wide commercial usage (for instance, if you want to put the photo on the cover of am international magazine). The price for the first basic license is the price indicated; the price for an ‘Enhanced License’ is usually indicated by a ‘quantity multiplier.’ Entering the specified quantity for a given image purchases use of the image under an ‘Enhanced License.’ For any other usage, or if you have any questions about the aforementioned, you can check with us at info@shootles.com.

Rights-managed
Any rights-managed images on our website will be clearly indicated. In such exceptional cases, pricing will not be indicated and you need to inquire at info@shootles.com.

When you're ready to purchase the image
Just checkout. After payment is cleared you will have access from your account to the download. When you log back in to your account you will have a period of 7 days during which you can download (or re-download) the image.

How do I get terms with Shootles so that I can be billed regularly?
For such an option, contact us.

DOWNLOADING IMAGES

How can I download an image I've previously purchased and will I be charged again for re-downloading it?
No, you will not be charged again. The download link remains live for 7 days or five downloads. To download images from a previous purchase older than one week, contact us at info@shootles.com.

How can I print out a past sales order?
You can access past orders from ‘My Account’ but you cannot print out previous invoices. You may print out the invoice for the current order by clicking the print button during the checkout process.

How do I save an image to my computer?
When you click on the download button from your account, choose ‘save as’ and save the image on your computer according to your naming and filing requirements.

ORDERING VIRTUAL CDs

What is a virtual CD?
It is a collection of royalty-free images based on a theme that is offered for sale online for immediate download. We do not currently offer this option.

What kind of Prints do you sell?
We sell art prints, printed by the artist only. They are editioned prints or sometimes monotypes. They may be photographic processes, lithographs, engravings or inkjet editions, or occasionally drawings.

How do they ship?
We use a variety of shipping methods outbound from Switzerland, depending on the destination. Shipping preferences may be discussed via email—where special handling is desired-- or chosen directly through the shipping options provided on the website.

What is your return policy?
We do not accept returns on prints due to the impossibility of insuring their condition on return.

USING DIGITAL IMAGES

What's the difference between RGB and CMYK formats?
When an RGB image is converted to CMYK, several parameters must be taken into consideration, including paper stock, four-color film output device, layout software programs used, types of inks used and special effects intended by you, the designer. An RGB format provides you with the most flexibility.

How large can I print your digital images?
As a general rule of thumb, our images can safely be enlarged to 125% of their original image size without affecting the quality. Since it's critical that you know what resolution you need for the output device, we recommend that you consult directly with your printer or service bureau to find out the specific capabilities of the device that will be used. And, of course, you can always contact us for more details.

How do I retain the original quality of an image when I want to enlarge it?
For the best quality, remember this general guideline: The image resolution (ppi) should remain equal to twice the screen frequency (lpi). You have options, however, to adjust the screen frequency, re-sample the image at a higher resolution, or lower the ppi-to-lpi ratio. For more details, read the following tips for enlarging images.

Tips for enlarging images
For the best quality, remember the general guideline of keeping the image resolution (ppi) equal to twice the screen frequency (lpi).

  • Use a lower screen frequency.
If you require only a 130 lpi screen frequency, you can enlarge the image to 9.8"x12.7" at 260 ppi and still maintain the 2-to-1 ratio of ppi to lpi. Lower screen frequencies will allow you to enlarge the images even further.
  • Re-sample the image to a higher resolution.
Many image-editing programs will allow you to re-sample an image to a higher resolution. Re-sampling will enable you to maintain the 2-to-1 ratio of ppi to lpi. Software programs can add data to your image by interpolating the colors of adjacent pixels in the image. This can cause the image to appear somewhat out of focus or blurry. To compensate for this, you may want to apply a sharpening filter to the image to eliminate some of the blurring. We recommend that you experiment with this technique to determine if the results will be satisfactory for your needs.
  • Use a lower ppi-to-lpi ratio, such as 1.5 to 1.
The recommendation of the image resolution (ppi) equaling twice the screen frequency (lpi) is to ensure the highest quality. You can go below this ratio with relatively little noticeable difference in quality. By using the ratio of 1.5 to 1, you can enlarge the images to 11.4"x17.2". You should never go below a 1-to-1 ratio of ppi to lpi. Be sure to experiment with different ratios to determine which works best for your requirements.

CONTRIBUTING MATERIAL

Can I contribute material ?
Possibly. To become a contributor, you need to have a minimum quantity of material to post and send us material for review. If you are of interest to us as a contributor, we will send you an agreement for signature and you will subsequently be added to our artists list.

If I am a contributor, how much am I paid ?
Shootles pays contributors 40% of receipts for downloads of their material. Payment is issued monthly directly to your Paypal account or quarterly to your IBAN denominated bank account. Contributors indicate to us the price they wish us to put on their images.
